One of the best choices I’ve made when it comes to my skin health was switching to natural deodorant.
Some years ago (when I was still living in Romania), it became very popular, when it comes to skin health, the phrase: “Stay away of Aluminum!”, especially when choosing a deodorant. Everybody was scared of this ingredient because, as it is well known, it can cause cancer.
Not going more in depth with this affirmation, I tried to avoid Aluminum in my deodorant by all costs. And honestly, every time I had to buy a deodorant without Al, it would take me ages. Just looking at the aisles piled with antiperspirants and toxic deodorants was making me sweat.
Lesson 1: Do your research before buying. Your skin will thank you.
Finally, I came over an Al free deodorant! I though that I found the one. I was so happy with it till my armpit skin got irritated. So I made more research into it and found out that the Al in deodorants is not the only ingredient that I should be aware of (duh!)
What I learned?
Even the products that claim to be “CLEAN”, sometimes are full of harmful stuff.
For example, the “natural deodorant” that I first switched to was claiming to be Al free but it was having a big quantity of Propylene Glycol. When used on a daily basis, it is proven that it hurts the skin, creating rashes or severe irritations. Also, it can affect different organs like the heart and the liver.
My advice will be to look very closely at the ingredients list and choose products that are made out of less ingredients, natural ones. For example, these Primally Pure deodorants (that I absolutely love) contain fewer ingredients, like:
tallow from grass-fed cows
non-nano zinc oxide
Hint: If you are scared by the list of ingredients and you don’t know how to “decode” them, there are plenty of apps out there that can help you choose better. I am currently using the Think Dirty App.
It is awesome because all you have to do is scan the product and they will grade it for you from 1 (healthy) to 10 (unhealthy). They are using a system which is based on 3 criteria: Carcinogenicity, Allergenicity and Immunotoxicity, and Developmental and Reproductive Toxicity.
Stay away of these ingredients
- Aluminum Compounds
- Propylene Glycol
- TEA and DEA
- Artificial Colors and Fragrances
Lesson 2: Do not believe the rumors. Try it yourself.
The majority of the reviews of different natural deodorants were saying how bad they feel about switching, complaining about the sweat odor you will feel when switching and so on.
What I learned?
SWEAT IS HEALTHY. Yes, you read it right. I was so grossed out when I first heard this statement.
I made my research and I discovered that besides the fact that sweat is a necessary function when detoxifying/flush out toxins, it is different for all of us. Depending on your body chemistry, you will either sweat a lot when switching (until your body adapts- it may take up to 3 weeks), or you will sweat for a short period of time (1 week).
The sweating doesn’t happen because the new natural deodorant that you’re trying “is not working” but because natural deodorants are not doing the harmful job of antiperspirants of blocking your pores to stop the sweating process. Natural deodorants let your skin breath!
You may ask: what if I am not so lucky as you and I will start sweating like crazy when switching to natural deodorant?
Lesson 3: You will not regret switching. There are several tips that can help you when detoxing.
First of all, let me tell you that you will not regret this decision. After detoxing and finding a good natural deodorant for your skin you will not be worried again about the health of your skin. You will know with certainty that you are doing the right thing, treating your skin with care and respect.
What I learned?
- A little bit goes a long way. All you need is 1-2 soft swipes per pit. But, in the beginning stages of your detox, it’s totally fine if you carry in your purse a travel-sized deo and freshen up throughout the day.
- Using a clean beauty, natural soap in the shower will make the process easier. I recommend this Follain liquid soap. If you want a more minimalistic version, my recommendation for a clean soap bar would be Juice Beauty – Green Apple Cleansing Bar. It is formulated with a variety of organic ingredients like sunflower seed oil, coconut oil, and other botanical juices.

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post (even though I wish it would be, haha). Primally Pure deodorant helped me make the switch to natural deodorant so effortless and I can never go back now. I really loved their products from the first time I’ve tried them and that’s why I’m writing this review. It has really made a change in my skincare routine!
